Mighty Maths in Action! Education Through Creation dives into the programme
If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for a Maths programme that’s easy to use, engaging for the kids and doesn’t leave you drowning in planning and organising.
Enter Mighty Maths from Gill Education which has it all and more! Luckily for Senior class teachers, it is now available for Third to Sixth Class. It has online interactive playful resources (yes, up to Sixth class, they need to play to learn too!), downloadable resources and lesson planning done for you in a teacher manual with endless ideas to guide each lesson and the most gorgeous Pupil’s books to bring Maths to life.
I decided to show on my Instagram page two Maths lessons, one for Senior Infants and one for Fifth Class, to give you a real feel for how Mighty Maths works in the classroom.
Senior Infants: Unit 12 Number 10
Interactive Digital Library
We kicked off our Mighty Maths Senior Infants lesson on the number ten with a bright, easy to follow interactive song on the board. It’s super visual, and catchy, with references to the number ten all over the video which I reallylove. Next up, we dived into a quick matching game that’s part of the programme. The kids were hooked –spotting, sorting, and shouting out answers.
Learning Through Play
It’s that lovely balance of learning and play where they’re not even realising they’re even doing Maths. Of course, we had our trusty counters and teddy bears out too. I love bringing in concrete materials in every Maths lesson. It helps make those early concepts really stick, especially with number. They had grouped the bears in tens by colour, and then I pushed them a little to make groups that total ten with the counters.
Maths Talk
The highlight for me, though, was the Maths Talk. I allowed them some time to free play with resources, and two of my dotes worked together to make ‘The Ten Little Pigs’ which was a play on words for the Three Little Pigs. They had ten blocks for the wall of the house, and ten ‘pigs’ (bears) guarding it, with one 'wolf’ trying to blow it down! Watching them chat to each other about numbers, explain their thinking, or having a little pretend play is so lovely. It’s one of those moments where you realise they’re learning more than just numbers and reminds me of how much I adore this job.
Fifth Class: Unit 14 3-D Shapes
Interactive Digital Library
For the Mighty Maths Fifth Class lesson, things look a little different – but the structure and ease of the programme are the same. This was a 3-D shape lesson, so I started with a warm-up activity on the board using the Interactive Toolkit to get everyone thinking. I love how it gets straight to the point – no filler, just clear prompts and clever questions, but still interactive and playful at this higher level.
Maths Talk and Maths Eyes
Then, looking at the Maths Talk in the Pupil’s Book, I really adore the little anecdotes that Gill Education have included. Making it about a dog’s food makes it true to life, which is what the new Maths curriculum is all about. Gill Education also do this very cleverly with their Maths Eyeselement, which is again, interactive and included in the books. For this, I looked at the different 3D models of the shapes.
This prepares the class for their written learning. After working through some problems on their whiteboards, I would move to some in the book.
As always, we finished with a bit of discussion – the class sharing how they tackled the task and explaining their thinking. That Maths Talk piece is a game-changer. It builds their confidence and shows me how much they’re really grasping. It also helps the teacher to keep the class on track with the vocabulary you want them to use!
Junior Infants to Sixth Class Available Now!
Mighty Maths really has something for every level, from playful matching games in Infants to structured problem solving and STEM in the Senior classes. It’s easy to teach, it flows naturally, and the kids enjoy it (which, let’s be honest, makes our job a whole lot easier!).
If you want to take a look, the full programme runs from Junior Infants to 6th Class, with loads of extras like games, real-world links, and that all-important structure for problem-solving.
