We're Hiring! Assistant Editor

Gill Books publishes an eclectic list of bestselling non-fiction from current affairs and absorbing history to page-turning biography and beautifully produced lifestyle, including recent bestsellers Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, The Gospel According to Blindboy, The Great Irish Science Book by Luke O’Neill and Linda Fährlin, Recovering by Richie Sadlier and Cornucopia: The Green Cookbook. In collaboration with some of Ireland’s best writers, brands and a network of creative talent, Gill Books creates a dynamic publishing proposition in Ireland, building on a 160-year heritage whilst looking excitedly to the future.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, hard-working and skilled Assistant Editor to work with Gill Books. Under the direction of the Managing Editor, you will assist in bringing our books from manuscript to print and help our authors deliver their stories to a wide readership.

You will help to shape our titles as part of the small team that produces our books. Central to this will be your close collaboration with all departments and an ability to navigate their different priorities.

Your excellent verbal and written communication skills will impress the team, freelancers and industry contacts, and enable you to handle our authors and their work with sensitivity, care and tact at all times.

You will have excellent editorial and proofreading skills, a strong critical eye and be fearless in the face of a semicolon. You will be highly organised, confident in working independently and show good time management.

Your unflappable, can-do attitude will enable you to move from juggling multiple tasks simultaneously to applying the laser focus required for detailed editorial work in a busy environment. You will be happy to take direction, pitch in and know that your effective management of administrative tasks are crucial to a smooth-running department.

Your problem-solving and decision-making skills will enable you to keep a cool head when it comes to bumps in the road.

If you have a third-level qualification, previous editorial experience (preferably in-house) and are proficient in MS Word, we want to hear from you.

Closing date: Friday 18 September 2020

To make an application, please email Deborah Marsh at dmarsh@gill.ie. In addition to a CV, applicants should include a cover letter explaining the opportunities they believe this position will hold, together with examples of relevant experience in the skills outlined above.
